Q&A - Lau Kid

Tell us about your story and how you started producing music.

I'm 18 years old, I live in Madrid, Spain, and I enjoy all music genres that I can, going from Metalcore to LoFi-Hip Hop, or from Dubstep to Progressive House, I love music in general. I started producing music at the age of 14. 2 years after the electronic music duo DubVision released their song "Redux" which to this day continues to be the song by which I was inspired to learn and motivated to create my own melodies and beats. After listening to that song, I started to listen to much more electronic music. I discovered artists who were well known back then, like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, and Martin Garrix who quickly became a key inspiration to start playing tunes and beats.

What has been your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is music in general. I love when an artist tries to capture what he feels in "simple musical notes" and that's a great thing. Also if I had to mention someone, it would be Porter Robinson. Although my style does not resemble he at all, he has been the one who has motivated me a lot to be a producer and create my own things. Seth Hills with his Electro House, San Holo with his chill tempo or Illenium with his Future Bass. There are many artists who have inspired me in this short term, so what really guides me is the music and what I feel when I listen to it.

How are you dealing with isolation?

In the beginning, it was a great thing personally, and at the end as well haha. Because I tend to be at home most of my time, creating things or doing stuff. Isolation helped me a lot in terms of the time I needed to be able to create many things, some great and others not that much, but I have greatly improved my skills as a producer thanks to that. I think we all work in different ways and although it is strange not being able to go out, meet your friends or just have a walk like you used to, because like everyone, you always miss those little things that inspire you in the end, to create something.

What DAW do you use to produce?

I usually use FL Studio although lately, I have used Ableton for some of my recent projects. But I do prefer FL Studio.

What are your top 5 plug-ins in your projects?

VST-2: Serum, Sylenth1, Spire, Massive, Nexus2

FL Studio Stock Plugins: 3xOSC, Sytrus, Harmor, Sakura, Harmless

What are you looking in a track when it comes to playing it as a DJ?

I personally prefer very energetic tracks, that make you jump and shake your head.

How many tracks are you currently working on?

I have many unfinished tracks and projects to improve so there are many.

How is your creative process? Do you start with a beat and then work on melodies? Opposite? Tell us the secret

I always start with a melody in my mind. Then I try to compose a piece on the piano, imagining melodies about the chords and the more I try, the more ideas I have. then I try to sample those sounds and create a break. Then it depends on the genre you are working with, for instance, if it's something melodic, like Progressive or Future Bass, it's usually much easier to create the melodies and chords from the drop. But when it is a genre where the chords are hardly noticeable like Bass House or Electro, the sounds vary therefore playing with the samples in the drop is something that works in general.

What is your current music production setup?
