Q&A - Frimax

Tell us about your story and how you started producing music.

Hello, Lowdown Recordings! My name is Frimax! I’m 23 years old! I come from Perpignan (France). I’m a DJ/Performer and Producer for the last 8 years! I produce Bass House, Electro House, Progressive House, Hardstyle, Jumpstyle and I’m really happy to be part of Lowdown. Thank you so much for the invitation!

What has been your biggest inspiration?

I’m an unconditional fan of Hardstyle/Jumpstyle artists like Ronald-V, Ruthless, DJ Furax, Dr Rude, V-Beatz… They were my influences since the first day! I’m also inspired by the Old/New French Touch like Mr Oizo, Daft Punk, Malaa, Tchami, Vladimir Cauchemar, Mercer and Mosimann for example. I’ve also the big chance to be friends with many artists in different musical styles like Icarix (Tech House), Filex (Bass House), Antoine Delvig (Electro House), Jeremy Prisme (Tribal), Freddy Caz (Urban Music), Werpo (Rap), ST2EV (Hip-Hop) and a new Djane actually advised by me... Vadanella (Techno)! Walt Disney is 50% of my inspiration too… It’s crazy I know! This man was a genius! He was able to create emotions by mixing music and cartoons! It’s incredible for me. When you ask me 'What has been your biggest inspiration?', I think it's all these things mixed all together!

What DAW do you use to produce?

I produce all my tracks on Logic Pro 9! I have to update to Logic Pro X soon though.

What are your top 5 plug-ins in your projects?

If I have to tell you my TOP 5 plug-ins I think it would be Serum (Xfer), Massive (NI), Sylenth1 (Lennar Digital), Sausage Fattener (Dada Life) and Valhalla Room (Valhalla). I can’t imagine my sessions without them!

What are you looking in a track when it comes to playing it as a DJ?

The track has to be original! I love the groove on the drops but the track has to be original! Original on the melodies and the sound!

How many tracks are you currently working on?

I’m working on 15 new IDs exactly! Mainly Hardstyle but I’m working also on 3 Electro House tracks with Asian melodies… fingers crossed!

Frimax

How is your creative process? Do you start with a beat and then work on melodies? Opposite? Tell us the secret

I start all my IDs with the drop. I can produce many styles like Bass House, Electro House, Progressive House, Hardstyle, Jumpstyle… but the drop is always my priority. Then I decide if I want an aggressive sound or a lead melody.

For instance, my track called ‘Long Xuyen 1997’. The preset and the melody of this track was the first idea! I wanted a loop with an Asian Melody! I did the loop with this Asian Melody in 2 hours and then the drums in 4 hours. The track was finished some hours later!

The session of my track ‘Zurgeuuuh’ was different! I wanted a sound really hard! I created two presets on Serum… a siren sound and an FX used in the Angerfist’s Productions (it was a secret…)! No melody! The track was finished 2 days later!

Sincerely I don’t know if I have a real secret but I think I’m passionate above all! I think this is the real secret when it comes to be an artist and share good music! You can’t do a good job if you are a fake passionate… Your tracks will be great if you work with love! This is 50% of passion and 50% of work!

What is your current music production setup?

I use a Macbook Pro, 2 Yamaha HS7 monitors, a keystation 49 MK3 of M-Audio, a Microkorg of Korg, a Maschine 2 of Native Instruments, an MPC 5000 of Akai, a Roland SPD-SX and recently the famous AR-48 of Zoom!
